How it works

Type a number, pick the unit you have and the unit you want. You can also paste a reading straight from an app, such as 12.4 MB/s, and the unit is detected for you. The result appears as you type, along with the same rate in every common unit (bps to Gbps, B/s to GB/s and MiB/s), the formula and the calculation line.

The converter follows two rules:

1 byte = 8 bits. Upper-case B is a byte, lower-case b is a bit, so MB/s and Mbps differ by a factor of 8.
Network prefixes are decimal. 1 Mbps is 1,000,000 bits per second and 1 kB is 1,000 bytes. Binary units (KiB/s, MiB/s) use 1,024 steps and are listed separately so they are never mixed in silently.

So Mbps = bytes per second × 8 ÷ 1,000,000, and the default example on this page, 1 GB/s, works out to 8,000 Mbps. Everything runs in your browser; use Share link to send someone the exact conversion.

Common internet speed conversions

The most frequent question is how a plan speed in Mbps shows up in a download window that counts in MB/s. Divide by 8 for the ceiling, then expect a little less in practice because of protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and the server you are downloading from.

On a wired gigabit connection a speed test usually peaks around 940 Mbps, which is about 117.5 MB/s. That gap is packet overhead, not a fault. For whole files rather than rates, the download time calculator does the division for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert bytes per second to Mbps?

Multiply bytes per second by 8 to get bits per second, then divide by 1,000,000. For example, 45,000,000 B/s × 8 = 360,000,000 bit/s, which is 360 Mbps.

Is MB/s the same as Mbps?

No. MB/s means megabytes per second and Mbps means megabits per second. One byte is 8 bits, so 1 MB/s = 8 Mbps and a 100 Mbps plan tops out at 12.5 MB/s.

Why does Steam show 60 MB/s on my 500 Mbps plan?

Because Steam counts bytes. 60 MB/s × 8 = 480 Mbps, which is 96% of 500 Mbps, so the connection is running at almost full speed. Steam can also be set to display bits per second in its download settings.

What is the difference between MB/s and MiB/s?

MB/s is decimal (1,000,000 bytes per second) and MiB/s is binary (1,048,576 bytes per second). 1 MiB/s equals 8.388608 Mbps. Some apps count in 1,024s but still write MB, which makes figures look about 5% lower than the decimal value.
